Parents bring their children (siblings may come too) to the Visser Family YMCA for an evening of food and activities (swimming, gym time, crafts, movies, sensory activities, etc.) while the parents have a night out alone. The program is overseen by a Special Education teacher who specializes in working with children who have Autism and cognitive impairments. Currently, Parent’s Night Out is offered once a month. The cost is $20 for members and $30 for non-members (for one child); for families with two or more children participating the cost is $40 ($60 for non-members). Financial assistance is available to those who qualify.

Pine Ridge Bible Camp is a summer camp with programs for children, youth, and the mentally challenged.

The Camp’s challenged programs are designed for special needs populations that include Down’s syndrome, autism, cerebral palsy and other like medical diagnoses. Every participant needs to be interviewed by Pine Ridge staff to ensure that Pine Ridge can adequately provide for the needs of the camper. The program activities are flexible and designed to get campers involved up to their abilities.

Children with special needs and physical challenges may also be considered for mainstreaming into our traditional summer camp programs.

Hope College offers science camps for children in grades pre-K through 9 (fall 2010). These programs feature hands-on investigations. Some of the sessions explore the magic and science behind Harry Potter; the world of animals; crime investigation; the mystery of the human body; and more. Autism Asperger Associates of Michigan offers spring/summer classes and workshops, including social skills classes for elementary, middle school and teen-aged children. Also on the schedule is “Under the Big Top,” a day camp from Monday, June 21 through Thursday, June 24 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. (includes lunch made by the kids). The day camp will include games, crafts, cooking and outdoor fun. All classes and activities are offered at 7027 10 Mile Road in Rockford. The BRAINS Summer Institute is designed to help children learn, maintain, and build new skills over the summer months. **Don’t forget that The Gray Center offers a Young Adult Network twice a month for individuals in high school and older. Parents meet at the same time. The Cheff Therapeutic Riding Center is in existence to improve the emotional and physical well-being of individuals through the therapeutic use of horses. Our center specializes in therapeutic riding as well as hippotherapy. Clients include (but are not limited to) mentally and emotionally impaired, those with Autism, Asperger’s, visual and hearing impairment , Down Syndrome, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Muscular Dystrophy (MD), Cerebral Palsy (CP), learning disabilities, Cystic Fibrosis, cancer, brain injuries, Attention Deficit (Hyperactivity) Disorder, seniors, veterans, and at-risk children. EnCourage Institute provides specialized interventions for learning needs. EnCourage Institute is a licensed agency for The P.L.A.Y. Project (Play and Language for Autistic Youngsters). The PLAY Project is a home consultation early intervention program for children (ages 18 months-7 years) developed by Dr. Richard Solomon based on the Greenspan DIR/Floortime model.
